One morning as I cleared dishes I watched the neighbors’ daughters, a 6 and 8 year old go about their morning. They waited for their dad to reverse his car from what would be their runway and then pulled out their mom’s shoes, makeup and jewelry. As the 6 year old attempted to balance in mom’s heels, the 8 year old run up to get their ‘Sunday best’ dresses.
The music was put on high volume, this was truly a fashion show for two…well, that is minus the neighbors. I heard them saying, ‘We have to look beautiful.’ At some point it turned into a discussion of how beautiful wedding dresses look. (I must say the wedding show does influence little girls). I watched them for sometime and left there smiling. My take out was that their heart’s desire was to look beautiful and truly captivating.
The desire to look beautiful and captivating really never ends…It was the theme when dressing up dolls like barbie and it tends to be the same theme during weddings.
Two years ago, when I was preparing to get married, my fiance and I attended a pre-marital counseling class with 6 other couples. It was interesting to see that as we all prepared for our weddings and life after the wedding…the theme among the ladies was the same….we all wanted to look beautiful. It makes me wonder how we were as little girls 🙂
Our friendships did not end after the class, in fact, that was just the beginning. A year and a half after we finished the course, we had a chance to dress up once again. This time, there was no bridal party, reception etc…it was just pure fun, an expression of God’s beauty.
Genesis 1:27 (NIV)
So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.God created male and female in His image.
God knew why both His male and female image had to be created as two sexes. God in Himself is beautiful 🙂
Psalm 27:4 (NIV)
One thing I ask from the Lord,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple.
Looking back, weddings are a lot like playing dress up, the best part is that you have a chance to partner with your spouse to make the ‘happily ever after’ a reality 🙂
